Can Facebook SPAM Get Worse?
I have to finally erupt into a bit of a rant here, for I am constantly getting email notifications these days for Facebook’s Public Events, which seem to have become the new Facebook SPAM.
I mean we all know Facebook SPAM is an epidemic already, but my goodness it’s actually getting worse!
When you create an event, you can easily invite every friend on your entire list.
And maybe your intentions are good, I mean we’re all trying to make our business a success, and sometimes we do want to help.
Sometimes these events might actually be providing value, but there is a line that I think has been crossed.
But then most of the time they are blatant pitches, products, opportunity meetings, you name it.
Do people think that because they are using Facebook and have so called ‘friends’ that they are inviting, this makes it O.K. to invoke a rash of spam?
And apparently, Facebook no longer considers these ‘Event Invitations’, for which I have unchecked to receive email notifications.
I do however want email notifications when friends send me actual Facebook messages (which may be why I get these ‘notifications’), because about half the time the Facebook messages are truly personal communications between us as people.
And then, Facebook messages are a healthy category of Facebook SPAM all on their own.
Of course I don’t even need to tell you about the links posted all over
SPAMs half acre and your own personal Facebook wall ….
Facebook SPAM has been a growing problem along with Facebook’s own popularity, but with these new ‘Public Event’ emails, it has grown to epic proportions.
I’m sure I’m not the only one having noticed this, are you seeing what I’m seeing?

And these two were from the same person in the same 24 hr period!
Needless to say they are off my friends list…..
Now I know, I might take the opportunity to offer them some free training, how to do social media marketing and what constitutes Facebook SPAM, but honestly, I’m just not going out of my way to look for people who just don’t get it!

Million Dollar Facebook Marketing Secrets
Hmmmmmm…… Really ??? !!!!!! I suppose I can join that webinar and learn how to SPAM!
Is a Facebook SPAM Attack Good Marketing?
If I had joined someone’s list and was actually interested in what they had to offer that would be one thing.
And if I had joined their group (eh hem, and I don’t mean having been involuntarily added to their group!), then I might expect occasional messages from them.
I would just hope that even those would be following the 90/10 rule of value over promotion, but that’s assuming they’re astute in the social media marketing medium.
But it does seem as many people are not yet aware that making friends on Facebook does not qualify those friends as having opted into your list!
Therefore it is Facebook SPAM to blindly add all of your Facebook friend to a ‘public event’!
Now there are certainly other forms of Facebook SPAM, including the propagation of virus’ through posts that include links. There are even new safeguards being implemented by Facebook.
But I just had to harp on this one new piece of Facebook SPAM evolution, the now dreaded ‘Public Event’.
It is not proper marketing to send out these notices to your entire set of ‘friends’!
Likewise, adding people unwillingly to Facebook groups just so that you can message to the masses is most certainly another new and growing form of Facebook SPAM.
If you have even begun to learn about Effective Social Media Marketing, you would realize that relationships are absolutely critical to your long term success.
Your marketing activities should be focused on collecting contacts and building your list. And it bears repeating that your Facebook list is not your opt-in list!
So, it makes no sense at all to be alienating people by throwing out Facebook SPAM, as this will certainly not keep your friends or grow your list!

I do not think facebook spam as a very good marketing strategy, instead it will let you earn only a negative impression for your site. In my opinion, make some facebook apps, or things like that and wait till you earn a sound fan base. It will take time, but will help you long time.
Hi Anthony!
I know, if people would take the time to soak up what is really going on and that there is good value to be had in some people’s content on Facebook, they might be inspired to do similarly rather than spam! And I suppose the intents are sometimes good in their hearts but we just have to lead by example so possibly influence the bad behavior to get better!
Thanks for stopping by, great to see you as always!

I am not guilty with Facebook spam. It is because I don’t even announce any kinds of events on Facebook. And besides my posting a link seems a problem to me because the link seems stuck on my Facebook wall and never been published. I just don’t like spam so whenever I see one I just delete it on my wall or hide the post.

Hi Irene!
I don’t announce public events either, and only invite friends who might be on my Fanpage or in my own team. Otherwise I send out notice in a blog post or to my list, and that’s it!
And I delete spam from my wall too!
Thanks for stopping by!

Wishing You Fabulous Success,
Argh, hate the events! So true!

SPAM is everywhere… also in facebook – ahhhh!!!
We can always expect spams everywhere, especially on Facebook. We can’t eliminate those people who do nothing but spamming. All we can do is to minimize the damage they may bring. Spamming issues are always a problem to every site.
