worpress security plugin

I want to share with you today something I recently learned, a really great Wordpress security plugin that will keep hackers out of your blog.

With Wordpress being such a wonderful blogging platform, it IS however an open source platform, so everyone should be aware that certain security measures are needed to keep those nasty hackers from ruining all of your hard work.

I had heard of a few like this one, but some of them were bashed in one of the forum posts I was reading lately, but this one comes recommended highly and had glowing reviews.

Besides those great social media plugins we all need, this one I think is a must if you want to keep hackers from infecting your blog with Trojans or worms or whatnot:  Bulletproof Security.

The staff behind this one is fully supportive, and I had a response within hours of a simple question I posed. One of the suggestions they make is to create an admin account with a name other than ‘admin’.

Well there’s no way to change the one default and I wrote for help, and was told it was as easy as creating a new one and deleting the old one.

Well that was easy! And they didn’t blow me off for asking what could have been interpreted as a stupid question or just refer me to wordpress help.

Once you install and activate the plugin, you do need to go to the options panel and set it up, easy to do with the really helpful information they have provided.

Anyway I wanted to pass this along, because these days hackers are ever more numerous, with recent reports of incidents at multiple hosting sites (that is, even if you host your own blog, you should take advantage of this or at least similar plugins!).

  1. Vicki, I am glad to see this post. I have worked as a network security engineer so it tickles me to see that normal users actually care about the security of their blog.

Let me emphasize what Vicki is saying.

Everyday, hackers are trying to take down your site; it’s true. Without the appropriate security they will eventually break in and do something you won’t like and maybe destroy it entirely.

So, go grab that plug-in. It is well worth it!

I am glad you have emphasized the point that hackers are actively trying to get at these blogs every day – and sometimes with automated tools that allow them to reach more targets! I have seen huge numbers of spam which come repeatedly within seconds from the same source. Thank goodness for that plugin but I know that alone is not enough.

Thanks for stopping by to comment!

      Wishing You Powerful Success,
      Vicki

      Hi Jennifer!

Great to see you today, thanks for stopping by! And yes, sometimes its the littlest things that can make the biggest difference! Hackers are numerous, relentless, and destructive. We work hard enough, no sense letting some malicious person tear it down!

      Wishing You Brilliant Success!

  4. Thanks for the plugin recommendation. I have implemented a few things on my blogs to improve the security but it gets tedious because I have to re-implement them every time I update WordPress. I will have to take a look at it.

      Hi Wayne!

Yes there are certainly other things to implement, I had heard of a few before finding this one. The ones you have might be enough, and it’s true, upgrading Wordpress becomes a nightmare sometimes the more plugins you have!

Thanks for stopping by, great to see you as always!

It is something we can’t take lightly. After many conversations with the plugin author, Edward Alexander, he sees it first hand and it’s a continual battle. Good to know people like him are working to protect our hard work!

  6. Hey Vicky,

Being optimal protected vs Hackers is a necessary for your security. Anyway with the right protection there´s no need to sweat and we can continue working on a safe basis.

    Thanks for this indication!

Have a secure and amazing rest of your day!

    • Vicki says:

      Thank You Gerald!

I just had another correspondence with Ed Alexander who has such frustration dealing with these criminals – I am really glad to have someone like him working diligently so that we can work worry free!

Glad to see you again here, thank you for stopping by and commenting!

      Wishing You Awesome Success!

      Hi Oliver!

I did the same, no big deal, actually I never had an .htaccess file to begin with, and when I had an issue I contacted the author who has been very helpful and responsive.

Turns out my issue was because my hosting service (1and1.com) uses PHP 4 which is out of date and all but obsolete. So he wrote some custom code for me to insert in my htaccess area in the plugin and fixed my issue. He also educated me about why I would need to check with 1and1 about my memory allotment (very low) before upgrading to Wordpress version 3 because it requires a minimum of 64M. Had I not already been with 1and1 for years and have 4 blogs I do not want to have to move, I would have left them already due to heartaches of them running old versions of SQL and PHP conflicting with my wordpress upgrade to 2.9.2!

So all in all, I have been very impressed with the support that the plugin author Edward Alexander provides, to say the least! He not only fixed my problem but educated me about some of the internal workings of Wordpress and the servers it runs on!

      Wishing You all the Best!

    Hey Vicki,

I’m all over it! Thanks for things. I’m launching a new WP blog venture and needed the extra security!

    • Vicki says:

      Hey there Ryan!

No problem! I know, the more we do with our blogging, the more we need to be aware of the security concerns and take measures! And I really really have good trust in the plugin’s author, he’s enlightened me to a lot of particulars that I’d otherwise have never known!

      Wishing You Awesome Success!
      Vicki
