Using Social Bookmarking to Improve Your SEO

I have written a post on the Keys to Effective SEO, but using Social Bookmarking to improve your SEO might be much more important now, especially now with Google’s recent search engine algorithm changes.

Getting your content shared on social bookmarking sites is one of the best ways you can increase your page ranking.

There are hundreds if not thousands of such sites including Del.icio.us and Digg.com.

Digg alone sees over 8 million users a month.

Aside from improving your SEO, you can also drive more traffic to your site using social bookmarking, a couple of different ways.

Your SEO is boosted by many factors, one of which is inbound links. The more quality links to your site, and the number of bookmarks to your pages on social bookmarking sites, the higher your rank.

And the number of votes for your page on that site further enhances your ranking both in Google’s eyes and in the traffic you’ll get from those sites due to your increased visibility there.

But be careful in your use of these sites to promote your own content. If you are spammy, bookmarking every page on your site, this will work against you. Just like anywhere else in social networking, you will be ignored, and worse, Google and other search engines will DECREASE your page ranking.

Remember that in order for your site to be shared by others, it has to provide content that is either enlightening, educational or entertaining, or any combination of the three.

And there are ways that you can make it easy for others to share your site. Social bookmarking buttons are available that you can add to your site.
