It is different in network marketing.  In the beginning, you do a lot of groundwork and foundation building, and you don’t make a lot of money. But every bit of work you do will continue paying you later, in what is known as a passive residual income, or royalty income.

If you were being paid hourly, you could complain in the beginning phases of network marketing that you were underpaid or getting less than minimum wage.

But once you complete the groundwork and foundation, the money formula changes drastically. Now, you are getting paid bonuses every month, even if you don’t work hard or when you take a vacation. You have succeeded in network marketing, it now works for you.

Professional network marketers look at the building period as a learning period. It’s like going to school. But, instead of paying tuition, you can earn some money while you learn.

But the work you do today, or more specifically, an hour you spend today is the equivalent of eight hours in the future with your business growth when you are taking the advantage of a duplicatable system.

So, in the beginning you do a lot of work that you don’t get paid for, but in the end you get a lot of pay for when you don’t work. That is why it doesn’t really make sense to ask a network marketer what they make. If they are still in the building stages they may not be making their target income yet, but are working hard at building their foundation.

But it’s that passive residual income that drives many people from other professions into network marketing. They want to realize a full time income in their retirement. They like the residual income and the financial security that network marketing brings.

On a sad note, there are some individuals who get into network marketing and build a foundation, but then because they didn’t feel they earned enough money during this learning and building stage of their career, they quit.

What Happens to Cause People to Give Up?

Perhaps they didn’t feel that there was any training necessary, other than learning to promote the product and pitch the opportunity.  When in fact, there are a very important set of skills necessary to be successful at network marketing, and the more time you spend at it, the better you get.

And then some fail to nothing other than some unseen clause in their policies and procedures, which causes them to lose a very large paycheck in the end. Or there are those who quit because of the lack of retention in their downline due to the difficulties realized by many who do this business part time but have compensation plans which do not pay enough to the part timer.

They only failed to learn how to make network marketing work for them. There are many ways in which people can approach this profession, from internet marketing, social media marketing, to the traditional prospecting. But there are a basic set of skills required regardless of the methods chosen.

The true rewards in this case go to people with the right training, persistence and vision. The persistence comes from those who are driven by a strong desire for or vision of the lifestyle it can provide, and this is explained in “Why Your ‘Why’ is So Crucial to Your Success“.

Success in network marketing comes only when you get the proper mentoring, learn the skills, and duplicate these efforts by taking advantage of a simple, duplicatable system. Duplication leads to success which leads to retention, which is the key to a passive residual income, the holy grail of network marketing.

So yes, many people work at network marketing for a while and then quit just before they go into the collecting stage of their network marketing careers.

But if you just take the time to follow these steps and keep going through the building phase until the royalty payouts and duplicating momentum takes hold, you will definitely succeed!

  • Determine your ‘Why’ and put it in writing so that you remember it when things slow down. The dreams you have are what will drive you to reach your goals of success.
  • Find the right mentor and get educated on the necessary skills. Any profession requires this much! Learn the tools of the trade, the ones you’ll need for any networking, marketing, advertising, and time management.
  • Use a duplicatable training lead generation system
  • Begin building your network of friends, online social networks provide a great way to extend your reach and make new contacts. Establish profiles using your name as a user ID and the same picture across all profiles.
  • Don’t quit! When things slow down, just stay on the slight edge, do at least a little every day. Continue improving your self and your skills.
