Leading by example, you can and should be motivating your downline, your team. But this doesn’t mean being a cheerleader or always being right.

It means knowing where and how to focus, and how to duplicate your efforts. It means understanding what actually drives your success.

It means building relationships, exercising patience, mentoring and encouraging. It means understanding the different personality types and working with them.

Although network marketing is known as a ‘relationship business’, it is truly a leadership training business. “A leader is not measured by how many followers they have, but how many followers they have inspired to lead.”

Understanding some of the key elements of your success in MLM is critical. Creating a true passive residual income depends on your relationships with your downline, their motivation, retention in your team, and duplication.

Relationships:

Many people come into network marketing thinking it’s going to make them a lot of money fast, and easy (often because that is what they are told), and that money is their motivation.

When in fact, even though it’s a relationship business, this is given merely lip service and the bottom line behavior is ‘recruit – recruit – recruit’ and to ‘close them in’. When dealing with leads and prospects, it is the personal follow-up, NOT the auto-responder follow-up, that is the key to converting leads into business partners. Again, it is the personal relationship that matters.

While you are still qualifying your prospects (only working with those that demonstrate motivation themselves and that they are coachable), the relationship begins to build.

You must get to know and get each of your downline to know and fully appreciate why they are in business, so that they can stay on the leading edge and maintain focus and persistence.

Retention:

Those who are driven by the money often don’t realize the importance of the relationship in long term retention. If you know network marketing, you realize that retention is the key to a passive residual income.

The moral of the story is that you, the leader, must instill this fundamental behavior of relationship building into your downline, by doing just that with each one of them, in a supportive manner, until that person is duplicating the relationship building and mentoring in order to sustain their own team.

Duplication:

If: (a) you have a simple, duplicatable marketing and training  system in place, and (b) you provide leadership in supporting new distributors with leads calls, scheduling meetings, and communicating, then your ability to motivate your downline to  duplicate your success will be unavoidable, given that they are coachable.

Duplication that leads to success results in retention, and again.  Duplication and retention will guarantee a momentum that is self  sustaining, creating a passive residual income.

As you leverage the talented leaders which you have inspired to lead through your own success, they will foster the same support and leadership in their downline.

Belief:

Once you have proven that success is possible, you create belief which is a fundamental in their own achievement of success. You have blazed the trail and set the pace, and then the wheel is in their hands.

Responsibility:

So, how do you get your distributors to take personal responsibility for their success, once you have handed them the reigns? You might try saying something along these lines:

“If you go out there and become a huge success
in this business, it will not be because of me, it will
be because of you.

“If you go out there and fail in this business, it will
not be because of me, it will be because of you.”

But you will find that some people will not pick up the ball and run with it, even after you have paved the trail.  They must be motivated by a strong, well defined ‘why’ or they won’t have enough persistence to stick with it through the building phase. You have to help them to see that they want the results of a successful business more than they want to avoid the inconvenience of building one.

The bottom line is that everyone needs to be coachable, so that the time comes when leverage can  occur, and that is when your downline begins coaching their downline, and creating duplication.

After time, voila! Passive Residual Income. Sweet!

To your success!

    Vicki,

This is beautifully and perfectly said. You have covered all the bases here and answer all those with unrealistic or half-hearted expectations about MLM.

The relationship is two-way and it consists of developing leaders out of those who ask to be. That’s why the serious networker knows it’s about personal development Up & Down the line.

Thanks. Live Your Dream & Own Your Life,
    Tony Lauria

Thanks for such kind compliments Tony! I appreciate it.

Yes it is a two-way street, which is why leading by example is so important, then we get to lead one another! (as you said, up and down the line)

Wishing you every happiness and success,
    Vicki
