Social Media Marketing is Fine, But…
Are you guilty of constantly pitching your biz-op or advertising your product or service in your social network? Do you do this on someone’s profile wall, or in your initial contact or most of your posts?
Do you barely get past an introduction with someone you have just connected with on a social network when you launch into a pitch of your product or opportunity? Do you send spam emails to recipients of groups you belong to?
If so, you are wasting your exposure and turning off your contacts with this tactic. You are killing your traffic exposure before it even has a chance to grow.
If you understand attraction marketing, or what social media could potentially mean to your SEO, you would avoid this kind of social media ‘marketing’.
This type of approach has been referred to as Hit and Run Marketing. Utilizing social networks to blatantly advertise your product or opportunity has people turning away as quickly as they would otherwise hit the fast forward button on their remote when TV commercials come on.
Is This Type of Social Media Marketing Really Working for Anyone?
It is well known that when someone who may be in need of your product or service lays eyes on your ad, they almost NEVER take immediate action.
Whether it is a product purchase or someone joining your MLM opportunity, this is preceded by a complex social exchange in which you have build a know, like, and trust factor with your prospect. It is not going to happen just because you have access to someone within the social media context.
When someone Tweets their product 5 or even more times in the same second, filling the page with their ads, I can’t un-follow them fast enough! Especially if I go to their profile and see that this is all they do.
Or even worse, when someone whom I have never seen on Twitter sends me an @ reply with a link to their product or service, and I go to their profile and see that not only am I not even following them, but they follow no one and have no followers, I block them immediately.
And when someone I barely know puts a post about their opportunity or service on my Facebook wall (which is viewed by all of my personal friends and people I may want to offer my service to), that is a bit of personal space invasion! In this case I immediately delete that post.
So Does Social Media Marketing Work?
Social Media is people centric; it is fueled by what interests them and has some type of emotional trigger.
No one likes to be sold!
Only content that provides some type of Entertainment, Education and/or Enlightenment will be awarded their attention.
To be successful in internet marketing you must first evaluate your target market and know what content will be meaningful and valuable to them.
Google is keenly aware of the amount of time someone stays on your page, and either punishes you in the rankings or rewards you with higher rankings accordingly.
To make the best of that exposure you need to over deliver on what they need, in order to build a relationship of trust with them.
Only then will they consider taking advantage of your product or service.
And just as importantly is their willingness to pass along your content, to foster its syndication.
If you provide valuable content; good enough that someone wants to come back and better yet, pass it along to their contacts, bookmark it on social bookmarking sites, and ultimately link back to it from their content, then you are building a Content Syndication Network, an essential component of any social media marketing strategy.
The Content Syndication Network is a crucial part of your Perpetual Internet Traffic Machine, which runs on two things – content, and syndication.
If your approach in getting them TO your content is not one which engages and interests them, and/or if your content is not meaningful to them, then you are wasting your traffic exposure and social media marketing efforts.
Social Media Marketing Creates More BackLinks and RSS feeds
When others elect to receive RSS feeds from your blog, this enhances your SEO and Google visibility even further. When someone posts a link to your article or blog on their web site, your search engine rankings are increased.
This is why your use of social networking can have such a powerful impact on your SEO. So don’t ruin your potential chances by sounding like a commercial, or saying ‘buy from me!’ or ‘join my business, I’m looking for leaders!’.
This will not build you a content syndication network and will destroy your social media marketing ROI.
Social media marketing is a very powerful thing in extending your reach, but the reach will not go beyond the first glance of your network’s users if you are only pitching your product or opportunity!
There is a powerful content syndication community platform, TribePro, which was created for just the purpose of syndicating content of its members.
If you want to have your content go viral with a few clicks of the mouse, this is a must have if you want to avoid the pain of waiting years for organic results. When you join be sure to look me up in my tribe, Best Pro Marketers, and we’ll syndicate one another’s content!
Social Media Marketing is powerful when done correctly, so be sure that you make the best of it and apply as many strategies as you can effectively apply!

Vicki,
You are absolutely right. There is no point trying to scream out to people that you have the “best” business opportunity for them.
People aren’t looking for the next best opportunity, they are looking for someone to show them exactly how to make it in this business.
Great post.

Wishing You Great Success,

I love your post. In my opinion, it’s kind of a hit or miss. I think some of the social marketing strategies work. Others just lack the imagination and creativity, and some, are just simply annoying.
Thank You Thomas!
You’re right, there are some strategies that work and some that don’t. It’s a matter of focusing on the ones that do, and spending that time wisely!
Wishing You Tremendous Success,

To make the best of that exposure you need to over deliver on what they need, in order to build a relationship of trust with them…. Only then will they consider taking advantage of your product or service.
I was into social marketing for a while but stopped. It was because of so many off topic posts and other people trying to market to my followers. With my schedule, I just did not have the time to keep it cleaned up.
I think keeping in mind a “why” is important. Why they want to stay connected with you. If you provide that, and give them good info along with pointing out things that will be helpful, it will go a long ways.
You made a wonderful job sharing these great tips. I agree that Social Media Marketing is a powerful SEO technique when used appropriately. I will surely try the tips you mentioned to boost my SMM results. I hope it will work for me.
Thanks, I’m glad you found this useful, good luck to you in your efforts!
Thanks for the great tips… I think Social media is not an easy medium for marketing the way some people has it seem like. Sure, it’ great to have lots of “real” facebook fans and have everything go viral.. but how many businesses really achieve that? Plus social media marketing has been overly abused and used inappropriately and that makes it even more difficult.
Thanks Paul! You are right, social media isn’t as easy for marketing as some may think. In other words it’s not as simple as throwing your links out there but really is about buildling relationships, a time taking endeavor. So hopefully more people will find the right training so that we can be less hammered with spam!
Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Wishing You Continued Success,
“Do you barely get past an introduction with someone you have just connected with on a social network when you launch into a pitch of your product or opportunity? Do you send spam emails to recipients of groups you belong to?”
– I am so guilty of this on a few occasions. Boy, did I get a lot of cold shoulders after that.
Thanks for the profound lessons, Vicki! Am sure to follow your words and correct my previous mistakes.
Hit and Run marketing – that is funny, but true.
Building a relationship is becoming very important whether in social marketing or your own newsletter. My first training on the internet was told to to be more agressive, so I have had to pull back a little. It really is the better way to go.
I agree with you. Evaluating your target market and knowing what content will be meaningful and valuable to them is really vital and a must-do in order to achieve access. Your article is entirely informative and helpful. Great post!
Thanks Tyler!
Yes, keeping in mind what is of value and will help them is paramount!
Wishing You the Best!

Very useful post… you hit on a lot of the common misconceptions/mistakes most people make when using social media for business purposes. I think the type of business you have makes a difference as well. Some products/services lend themselves way better to social media, so it’s important for businesses to think about whether their time and money is best spent on it.
very true..I really hate it when newfound friends add me on fb and I thought it was nice of them then I realize later they only want to post their product ads on my wall. It pisses me off and I always remove them from my news feeds or disabled posting on my wall.
