mlm paradigm shiftFor those in network marketing who are programmed to “lead with the product” or “lead with the opportunity”, it might be the most difficult thing to do to convince yourself how or why this is not necessarily correct.

When you do this without the focus first being on the people, and the personal relationship, you may end up having to talk to many more people to get to one to sponsor into your business.

It really is one of the toughest nuts to crack in this business, unlearning those old adages!

Truly amazing once you think about it.

Simply put, business IS about relationships, plain and simple.

Think of sewing seeds in unprepared soil and then doing the same in a well cultivated garden. What are your odds of germination and a healthy crop in either case?

And do you think a five minute conversation with someone constitutes a relationship worthy of dumping your product or plan into their lap, unsolicited?

Ask yourself, did you have permission to present your opportunity to them? Do you realize how offensive this can be, how unprofessional this appears?

The focus on product and opportunity is so ingrained in the old school MLM psyche that it seems logical and natural to lead with the product, and to coin the phrase, “the product sells itself“.

Well, the word to notice in that statement is”sells“.

If you want leaders to join your business and become part of a growing team, then sell is the last thing you should be doing. If you want to just retail the product then of course selling makes more sense.

Not to displace the importance of a good product when it comes to success in a network marketing business however, but you are your most important asset. And everyone knows that most people love to buy, but no one likes to be sold.

The same with an opportunity. Even if you think you have the best one, your praises will fall upon deaf ears with someone you barely know and have not built a trusting relationship.

The last thing you should be leading your prospect to is a company replicated website. Save that for when the relationship has led you to that point.

Its a Relationship Business

mlm paradigm shiftThe truth is, albeit not completely overlooked in most MLM companies, is that it is a people business.

But they never tell you to lead with yourself. When in truth, you are who your prospect is judging first. Not your product. Not your opportunity. People join you.

They call it relationship marketing for a reason.

Yet many people only pay lip service to the the fact that it is a people business, and hype it up, but give you no training on how to first capture their interest, determine whether they are a valid prospect and right for your business, or build that relationship.

Product brochures and opportunity presentations are not people skill training. If you instead lead with yourself, and help people without an agenda, people will begin to know, like and trust you.

People join people!

Now, I don’t mean to completely dismiss the value of a great opportunity or product (it must be a product that stands out from the crowd to drive a successful network marketing business).

And that goes for the warm market methods of network marketing, that building relationships and KLT (know-like-and-trust) is essential, before bringing up your product or opportunity.

But online in the land of spam, it is even more important to be authentic, and have integrity! If everyone is spouting off about their great product and opportunity no one will pay attention.

Just because there are instant connections and friendships to be made does not mean that the KLT is instant. In fact, it will most likely take longer!

Therefore the lead in the case of online marketing must be you.

Think about your warm market. You are already leading with yourself. People still join you because of who you are.

And from giving without want, expecting nothing more, you are building relationships which you will have for a lifetime.

Once this product -> to -> people epiphany finally occurs, you are on your way. Until then, you may continue chasing your friends, family and co-workers. But when you begin to get your own qualified, targeted leads online, leading with yourself, and coaching others to do the same, you will be amazed at how quickly things can change.

Good stuff. I wish more people in our industry thought this way. If they did, everyone in America would want to be a part of it. As the old saying goes “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

    Thanks, great blog.
    Greg

    • Vicki says:

Thanks Greg! I agree, if people were only to educate themselves a bit in this industry, it could truly be our financial stimulus package!
      I appreciate your support!

Having been on that side of the coin and involved in network marketing for around 10 years, I can say that this is a great post. I have felt that way and trying to convince myself that I didn’t need to ‘lead with the product’, when the product was the reason I got involved in the first place, was a hard lesson to learn.
Great post – keep them coming!

  3. These are all great lessons that we have learned over the past 2 years that have helped people move to the next level.
Good job getting this out for all to see.

Thanks Kathy! Yes, I know that most people working in social media these days know this stuff, but there are always people just jumping into it that still really don’t get this ( I got into a conversation with someone on the TUT forums about the same point!).

  4. Hi Vicki,

Very nice summary! You hit on so many valuable points such as relationship marketing, providing value, branding you. Newbies sell and professionals sort :) .

Too many networkers make the mistake of leading with their products and opportunity as the main way to sponsoring. Products don’t sell themselves, smart marketing does, and as for opportunities, people follow people, not companies.

    I enjoyed your post!

Hi Janett! Thanks! I liked your added points, Newbies sell, and professionals sort, Products don’t sell themselves, smart marketing does! And yes indeed, people join people, not companies!

      Wishing you All the Best!

    Vicki,

Great content. It amazes me how the industry still teaches “product” first. I have learned a lot over the years, and your post has reminded me to keep the focus on the people… cause without that, the money will not follow. And, quite honestly, money earned without caring about the people is not worth more than money earned by helping others. The dollar is still worth a dollar, but the seeds we sow into others will multiply beyond expectation…and the sower will reap far more.

    Blessings,
    Joy

    • Vicki says:

Thank you so much Joy! It’s true the industry still continues to beat the product/opportunity drum but I suppose that is what companies do. As distributors however, we really do have to think in terms of people first!

      Thanks again for your support!

Wishing you Every Happiness and Success!

  6. Hi Vicki,
your post is stuffed with great nuggets: “Ask yourself, did you have permission to present your opportunity to them?” or “Just because there are instant connections and friendships to be made does not mean that the KLT is instant.” I have sometimes the impression that only because we are able to connect instantly, a certain breed of people automatically regards this as a permission to share their opportunity with their “friends”. Nothing could be farther from the truth. You shed a lot of light on this subject. Thanks for doing so.
    Take care

Thank You Oliver! It is true that in this ‘instant gratification’ society, coupled with the instantaneous technology and automation that it provides, people seeking to do this business online need to be even more aware of the quality of the relationship as it relates to what actions they take in their business!

But if we just stick to asking the question ‘How May I Help, How May I Serve’, seeking only to help others, giving without want, without an agenda, providing massive value, then all of the things that should happen as a result will happen!

  9. You are so right, Vicki! I wish that more people would teach that. I’ve known of businesses where you are a secondary or tertiary part of the business pitch. Why would someone want to join someone who isn’t even remotely a leader? I’ve known others that try to show some elements of personal branding, but still don’t get it.

      Hi Steve!

That’s why I called it a paradigm shift, because it’s a concept that does take a bit of thinking about before you really ‘get it’ sometimes. It’s such an ingrained philosophy in traditional networking to lead with the opportunity or product, but in fact the person has displayed some kind of leadership or developed some kind of relationship (or both) with the people they recruit.

Which is what has to translate online, even more pronounced (in the leadership and relationship over product and opportunity department!) Once people get this concept, it’s easy!

Thanks as usual for your time in commenting!
      Wishing You Every Success,

I think you’re right, if everyone understood this there would probably be a higher success rate in the industry! Yet people still tell me that their upline is telling them to do nothing but make a list, talk to everyone you know about your product and opportunity. Forgetting that skills are needed even without doing anything online! There are plenty of offline methods to use, which I never heard about until going online and getting real training. Even people skills are so much more than reading ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’ (albeit a great book indeed!).

Thanks for stopping by once again, always a pleasure to hear from you!
